Dealing With A Counter Offer
Handing in your notice can quite often prove stressful. Naturally your current company will not want you to leave, and they may decide to make a counter offer and talk about further career advancement to demonstrate why staying with them is the right career move.
Whilst the decision should ALWAYS lie with you and you should never feel pressurised, here are a few ideas to help you make the right choice.
Why are you looking?
Money may play a part in your decision, but for most it is about job satisfaction whether that be training, additional qualifications, more responsibility and the type of work/projects you are involved on.
To help, firstly make a list of why you are looking for a new opportunity, what are your main driving factors, why are you currently unhappy and where would you like your career to be in 3 years’ time.
Once you have your list, compare your current and the new role against your aspirations and give each point a mark out of 5.
Feeling Valued
After your interviews you will be on cloud 9 and feel 100% valued. This doesn’t mean your current company don’t appreciate your efforts, but they have probably forgot to tell you.
In your exit interview it’s ok to ask why they have decided to offer more money or further career advancement now and not before.
They won’t want you to leave and a fresh start may offer you career fresh impetus and enjoyment but it’s important you hear what they have to say to ensure you are making the right choice.
Be Objective
Leaving current colleagues behind can be tough and it may make you reconsider moving; this should form part of your decision-making process but try to keep this decision objective.
Ultimately you should focus on which role matches your career aspirations and ambitions, it’s also ok to ask to meet some of the staff at your new company as this will give you reassurance about the new people you will be working with.
Stay Professional
Throughout the whole process, stay professional, emotions may be running high on both sides, but it is important you remain calm and if you do decide to still leave then you leave on the best possible terms.
