Pennon Group Confirms Major Fish Kill Linked to Treatment Works

Pennon Group, the parent company of South-West Water, has confirmed that a pollution incident at one of its treatment works was responsible for a major fish kill in the St Austell River in Cornwall.

The event occurred in the Pentewan Valley and is believed to have been caused by a delivery of liquid lime, which subsequently entered the river system.

The Environment Agency reported that the incident and the impact it had had on aquatic life, killing potentially thousands of fish, including sensitive species.

Investigations are ongoing, and the agency has described the incident as significant, South-West Water is cooperating fully with regulators and will review its procedures.
